Kathmandu, March 25
Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has warned the European Union not to undermine Nepal’s sovereignty.
Oli’s statement comes days after the foreign ministry condemned a report by the EU’s Election Observation Mission on the recent polls in Nepal. The ministry had said that the mission’s report challenged the constitution and breached an agreement it had signed with the Election Commission before it began observing the polls. Similarly, the Election Commission had said the report was unacceptable.
Oli said that the report undermined Nepal’s sovereignty. “The Nepali people feel that the EU has disrespected them,” said the Prime Minister referring to the EU’s statement. “I request the EU to rectify the statement,” added the Prime Minister.
The EU Observation Mission has already said that its report is compliant with standard international practice and it was up to the government to decide what it wants to do with it.
